APAN 57 - Thailand


APAN57, Bangkok, Thailand was held from 29th January 2024 to 2nd February 2024 and I was privileged to be a fellow in APAN57.

APAN Introduction & Fellowship Meeting – Liana Jacinta

Introduction to APAN, activities, and the purpose of Fellowship was discussed by Liana Jacinta, General Manager, APAN on 29th January 2024, and also the importance of having NREN in a country while in the introduction. An introduction; a self-introduction was given by fellows to the audience. Also, the General Manager described how we should grow in the community and rebuild the cultures/ events that faded away while in the pandemic.

Review, refreshing and enhancing your national eduroam deployments – Terry Smith

Date : 29th January 2024

Time : 11.00 am – 5.00 pm

Throughout three sessions on 29th January 2024, the introduction and the status of eduroam in continents were described by Brook Schofield and Terry Smith. Also, the status of eduroam in Malaysia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, etc. Then discussion was headed to how to improve the eduroam services there eduroam is not there and how to expand the project inside the country, eg: to airports. As a fellow and an engineer in NREN in Sri Lanka, LEARN, I have got the support and the backup to enhance the eduroam experience in Sri Lanka. The target is to expand the eduroam and familiarize educa;onal roaming among the community in Sri Lanka.

Identity Federations - short talks and federation updates - Terry Smith

Date : 30th January 2024

Time : 9.00 am – 10.30am

Updates on the Federations were given by Malaysia and Sri Lanka in the morning session on 30th January 2024. Services in SIFULAN were described and how those are implemented. While having the discussions on the updates in Federations in NREN, got the opportunity to share the manual (Technical implementation). and ideas on LIAF, and LEARN with fellows who had an interest in having a federation.

APAN fellowship catch-up with GM and Sec - Liana Jacinta

Date : 30th January 2024

Time : 11.00 am – 12.30 pm

Liana Jacinta, General Manager, APAN explained why alumni are needed for the community to grow. The fellows were gathered and the discussion was initiated on how each fellow would be able to contribute to the APAN community. Ideas were success stories, Contributions/ support to enhance the website, Papers, and many ideas on how to contribute to the Community, etc.

Introduction to SIRTFI - Security Incident Response Trust Framework for Federation Identity – Terry Smith

Date : 30th January 2024

Time : 1.30 pm – 5.00pm

Terry Smith, Pal Axelsson described, why we need to be concerned about security, countermeasures, and policies for federations. Also, Speakers gave an idea about the policies used in European countries. After having the discussion, currently, we are aware of the lack of many policies on the protection of data and the lack of awareness of user information data protection. Also, presenting federation updates were continued with other NRENs (Nepal, Japan, etc).

Connecting SP to your federation – Terry Smith

Date: 31st January 2024

Time : 9.00 am – 10.30am

The policies and procedures which are needed for creating services were discussed. Also, more concerning points in federations were discussed. The idea about the way that European federations act while connecting services to federations.

Workshop – Connecting service to eduGAIN - Terry Smith

Date : 31st January 2024

Time: 11.00 am – 3.00 pm

A session was continued as a discussion of how to connect and what to have as a service to connect to the eduGAIN. Also, a discussion was initiated about the code of conduct v2. Also, Pal Axelsson explained how we would be able to use the eduGAIN website to obtain data. Also, after Pal Axelsson’s explanation, helped me to find more services that other federations/NRENs are using on other continents. Not only that but also It supported me in having a picture of how other NRENs/Federations provide services to their members.

Workshop – Providing service from eduGAIN - Terry Smith

Date : 31st January 2024

Time: 3.30 pm – 5.00 pm

Policies and steps to get services were discussed in a pointed manner while in the session.

Segment Routing – Makito Lay

Date : 1st January 2024

Time: 9.00 am – 5.00 pm

Segment routing session labs were on APNIC Academy. All the materials and the testbed environment were provided to the participants through the APANIC academy accounts. The Cisco router and the switches were configured according to the manual provided. Key concepts and technical introductions were done by the instructor for the participants. I got an opportunity to get an idea about the network, which is used in most of the NRENs, and how we have implemented it.

From the fellowship opportunity, I got a chance to associate with resourceful people and engage with different cultures.
