VXLAN Tunnelling - Internship at LEARN

VXLAN Tunnelling

Objectives

  • Configure switches, routers for implementing VXLAN and do load testing

Introduction

Virtual Extensible Local Area Network,VXLAN are widely used  for supporting to address the scalability in mostly data centers where cloud computing is applied in large scale. VLANs are implemented over L2 and in VXLANs, they are implemented as L@ tunnels over L3.  VXLANs supports more virtual domains than VLAN is being capable of providing.

VXLAN tunnel endpoints are connected to routers and the VXLAN tunnels are deployed between routers as shown in FIgure 8.01.

Figure 8.01 : Setup for VXLAN tunneling

Method

For implementing the setup, two HP MSR routers(HP MSR2013 and HP MSR3012) and two HP switches(HP proCurve 3500yl, HP A5500) were used.

Figure 8.02 : Configured Setup

As shown in Figure 8.02,set up was deployed with the ip addresses as shown. VXLANs are configured in the interfaces those are connected to routers and other interfaces were configured as VLANs. And two tunnels were initialized for VLAN 198 and 199.

Figure 8.03 : setup for load testing

For do load testing and checking the tunnel as shown in Figure 8.03, a switch was connected with a new VLAN 119 on switch and connected to the 10.0.0.0/24 subnet. Network monitoring and measuring tool (LibreNMS) was installed into the VM newly installed for do the load testing due to port issue, the network analyzing part was not done as for higher rates.

Problems Encountered

Some problems were risen while configuring VXLAN on routers because of some thorital conflictions due to lack of knowledge on VXLANs. For load testing, bandwidth of the ethernet ports on the machines were not sufficient for a proper load testing
